Today nearly anyone can apply for and be
granted FAA approval to own and operate a sUAS (small unmanned aircraft system)
in the US. While predominantly for
commercial use, the main need these to be towards File, Video, or Photo. Currently around 90% of all approved permits
are for small businesses. What makes
these companies successful? Below we
will take a look a few skill sets that can be make it or break it for new
comers.
Video
When we talk about video we are not talking about just quality or HD video, with the right funds anyone can buy the newest camera and mounting equipment for it to achieve excellent quality. We are video filming skills, this includes things such as the proper shots (Framing and perspective) of the shot, movement (panning, tilting . . .), and overall technique (zooming, following . . .) without these basic skills the best equipment on the market is somewhat useless.

Orthos
Orthos, better described as mapping is another essential skill. While not new to the market, this has been around for years in the traditional (Manned) aerial photography scene, its importance is just as important in the drone market. Orthos short for (orthophotos) is essentially stitching photos together and correcting them to make one large big picture of the land or object being photographed.

Photogrammetry
Photogrammety is the skill of overlapping photos to give multiple perspectives of the same site. This is essential to pull measurements and data from images. The barrier to entry here lies in first becoming certified to do this type of work, then being faced with many other skilled competitors who have been doing this for years in the (Manned) aircraft business.

LiDAR
LiDAR drones are a relatively new development in the drone market. LiDAR drones can be through of as a miniature drone, they are small and lightweight compared to other aerial equipment. This makes LiDAR drones the perfect solution for those hard to reach or navigate area such as in or around tight quarters or under bridges or other structures. Combined with larger traditional drones this makes the perfect combination.
